Rebel Regiment Marches in Washington DC
On July 4, the Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment had the honor of representing Strom Thurmond High School, Edgefield County, and South Carolina in the National Independence Day Parade in Washington DC. This was truly an honor for this ensemble.

Rebel Regiment Finishes Third at the Swamp Classic
Congratulations to the Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment for their great performance at yesterday's River Bluff Swamp Classic. The Rebel Regiment finished third and earned an excellent rating in highly competitive 4A class. Thank you to all of the parents, alumni and community members that came out to support our awesome students. A special thanks goes out to our parents and volunteers that braved a torrential downpour to help feed, load and get us down the road to River Bluff. Please join us next week at District 3 Stadium in Rock Hill for BandBEAT.

The drawing will be held during halftime at the Strom Thurmond vs. Pelion game on October 19, 2018. Tickets are $5 or you can purchase five tickets for $20. Jerry and Sides Head to University of South Carolina
2018-19 Rebel Regiment Drum Majors Kadeisha Jerry and Braeden Sides head to Columbia to participate in the University of South Carolina Drum Major and Leadership Clinic. These student leaders will participate in several conducting and leadership training courses during this three-day clinic on the USC campus. Lets wish them good luck and safe travels.

SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award
The Bands of Strom Thurmond High was just named a 2017-18 SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award recipient. The Outstanding Performance Award (OPA) is the largest and most prestigious award given by SCBDA. High school bands receive points for their participation and achievement in four major SCBDA events (SCBDA Marching Band Championships, SCBDA Region/All-State Bands, SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment, and SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Assessment). A minimum of 90 out of 100 OPA points is required for high school programs, The STHS Band was one of eleven 2A high school band programs in the state of South Carolina to earn this prestigious award. The JET and Merriwether Middle school bands were recipients this prestigious award for the 2017-18 school year. This is the second time that all three band programs in Edgefield County received the SCBDA OPA in the same year. Congratulations to these three programs on this monumental achievement.

Rebel Regiment SCBDA 2A State Champions
On Saturday October 28, 2017 the Strom Thurmond High School Rebel Regiment competed in the SCBDA's 2A Marching Band Championships on the historic campus of Spring Valley High School. The Rebel Regiment earned the honor to compete in this prestigious event a week after being named the SCBDA 2A Lower State Runner-up. The Rebel Regiment competed against 15 other 2A bands from around the state and was crowned the 2017 SCBDA 2A State Champions receiving a final score of 91.3 and earning caption awards for High Overall Effect, High Music and High Visual.
The Rebel Regiment's 2017 program was entitled "Lunar" and featured "Mars" by Gustav Holst, "Space Oddity" by David Bowie, "Moondance" by Van Morrison, "Moonlight Sonata" by Ludwig Van Beethoven, "Brain Damage" by Pink Floyd and "Enterprising Young Men" by Michael Giacchino. The 2017 design team was comprised of Jeff Fackler, John Fannin, Mathew Smith, Jason Frith, Kevin Piner and Justin Craig. The Rebel Regiment Directors are Justin Craig, Candance Craig, Zach Dobbs, and Angelyn Dorn. The 2017 instructional staff includes Tevin Middleton, Josh Hobbs, Adrianna Leon and Kevin Piner for the guard caption and Jason Frith, Brian Turner, and Avery Wise for the percussion caption.

SCBDA State Finals
On Saturday, October 28 the Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment will be traveling to Harry Parone Stadium on the beautiful campus of Spring Valley High School to compete for the 2017 SCBDA 2A State Championships. We would love for all Rebel Regiment fans, parents, and alumni to join us for this prestigious event. The Rebel Regiment will be performing at 9:15pm. Lets take over Harry Parone Stadium on Saturday in support of not only the Rebel Regiment but all 16 SCBDA Finalist bands from around the State.

Rebel Regiment TOB Grand Champion and Lower State Runner-up
Congratulation to the Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment who was named the 2017 Blythewood Tournament of Bands Silver Division Grand Champions; winning Class 2A, and winning high visual. The Rebel Regiment was recently named the 2017 SCBDA 2A Lower State Runner-up. The Rebel Regiment traveled to the campus of White Knoll High School to compete against 13 other lower state bands on October 21. Congratulations to the Pelion Marching Pride who was named the 2017 Lower State Champion. Congratulations to the Rebel Regiment on these recent accolades.

Rebel Regiment Finishes Second in Class
On October 7 the Rebel Regiment traveled to District Three Stadium in Rock Hill to compete in BandBEAT for the first time. BandBEAT was sponsored by Carolina Crown and the Yamaha Corp. This band competition attracted some of the top groups in the region and drew participants from three states across the southeast. This event also allowed the Rebel Regiment to receive adjudication from a national panel of judges using the Bands of America score sheets. The Rebel Regiment finished second in their class and received the seventh highest score of the day. Congratulations to the Rebel Regiment as they continue to compete and entertain audiences across the state.

Rebel Regiment Ventures to the Upper State
On Saturday September 16 the 2017 Rebel Regiment ventured to the upper state to participate in the Powdersville Premiere. This was the first time that the Rebel Regiment has performed in the upper state since 2005. The Powdersville Premiere was a clinic and exhibition that gave the band an opportunity to work top Drum Corps International contributors Gino Cipriani and Andy Ebert. The Rebel Regiment had an opportunity to perform for a packed house and received feedback from a nationally acclaimed panel of judges. This was a great kick off to our 2017 competitive season.

2017 Parent Exhibition
Join us on Tuesday, August 15th at 6:30 as the 2017 Rebel Regiment debuts their 2017 competitive program Lunar in exhibition. Band Camp in Full Swing
The Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment just completed their first full week of full band camp and the 2017 marching season is off to a great start. Color Guard and Percussion members have completed their third full week and are making great progress in their development daily. The members and staff are excited about the progress and potential of this 2017 group. We are looking forward to debuting our 2017 program entitled "Lunar" at our first home football game Augusta 18th.

Rebel Regiment Host 7 Time DCI Champs
On July 6th and 7th The Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment had the pleasure to serve as a host to the seven time Drum Corps International World Champions The Cavaliers from Rosemont, IL. The Cavaliers used JET Middle School and Strom Thurmond High School as their housing site during their recent visit to the Palmetto State as they prepared to compete at CrownBEAT on July 7th. CrownBEAT is a DCI show hosted at River Bluff High School and sponsored by Carolina Crown. It brought six of "Marching Music's Major Leagues" own to the Midlands for an evening of World Class DCI competition. Our members got to watch this world class group rehearse over the course of their two day stay on our campuses. A few of our students even volunteered to help serve the corps. members lunch on Friday before they concluded their stay with us. This was truly a great experience for our band students and for our community.

We held Drum Major training and auditions this past week. We had eight fantastic candidates audition to fill the void left by senior Drum Major Bryston Butler. Rising seniors Olivia Bedenbaugh and Tia Gordon were selected to lead the Rebel Regiment for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. Congratulations to these two outstanding young musicians.

2017 Band Banquet
On Thursday, May 27 more than a 170 Strom Thurmond band parents and students honored the achievements of the 2016-17 Band of Strom Thurmond. Awards were given to students for their participation and achievement in all facets of the band program including marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, and individual accomplishments. The banquet was a great evening filled with fellowship and reflection on the 2016-17 school year. Thank you to all the parents and district staff members that made this event a success.

SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Performance Assessment
On Friday April 21, twenty two STHS band students participated in SCBDA Solo and Ensemble Performance Assessment at Aiken High School. These twenty one students participated in twenty one Solo and Ensemble events with many of them participating in multiple events. They earned fifteen superior ratings and six excellent ratings. Congratulations to these students on their fantastic accomplishment.

The "Swingin' Governors" Perform at Local Elementry Schools
As part of our Annual Middle School Band recruiting process the "Swinging' Governors" gave three performances at Douglas, Johnston, and W.E. Parker Elementary Schools. The elementary school students were able to see instrument demonstrations, and got to hear a short concert from the "Swinging' Governors". These performances were geared towards exposing fifth grade students to the opportunity of joining band in the middle school. As students transition to middle there are several opportunities afforded to them, band is just one of those opportunities. Unlike other programs in middle school band is a program that requires its members to begin in sixth grade to ensure that the myriad of musical concepts is taught before transitioning to high school.

STHS Symphonic Band Earn Superior with Distinction Rating
The Strom Thurmond High School Symphonic Band received straight superior ratings at SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment on Thursday, March 23. Concert Performance Assessment was held at Lexington High School this was a three day event and Lexington served as one of four host sites for this state wide assessment event . Congratulations to this great group of students on this outstanding accomplishment.

2 Edgefield County Students Participate in All-State Band Clinic
Edgefield County band students Braeden Sides and Noah Kowalewski participated in the SCBDA's All-State Band Clinic at Furman University March 10-12. The students participated in rehearsals and master classes over the course of the weekend and the weekend concluded with a concert on Sunday. Congratulations to these two outstanding band students on this fantastic accomplishment.

Ten Strom Thurmond Band students participate in the 2017 SCBDA Region 2 Honor Band Clinic. These ten students auditioned for this ensemble in January and were seated or named alternates. Gabe Herrin, Jacob Hodges, Andy Hoffmann, Meg Hoffmann, Carly Hutcherson, Tommy McCain, Jordan Pixley, Robert Playford, will be traveling to the USC School of Music to participate in this honor band clinic. 39th Annual USC Band Clinic
Five Strom Thurmond Band students have been selected to participate in the 39th Annual University of South Carolina Band Clinic with over 400 students from 8 states. Andy Hoffmann, Meg Hoffmann, Carly Hutcherson, Tommy McCain, and Jordan Pixley will be traveling to the USC School of Music to participate in this honor band clinic. The students will take in a series of concerts over the course of the weekend and will rehearse in preparation for a concert that will be presented on Sunday February 12 at the Koger Center for the Performing Arts. The honor band concerts will begin at 2:00pm.

On Saturday, January 14th over 50 students from Edgefield County Auditioned for the SCBDA's Region 2 Honor Band. 11 of those students received invitations to audition for the SCBDA's All State Honor Band. Congratulations to the 24 Edgefield County Band Students that were seated or named alternates in the SCBDA Region 2 Honor Bands. There were also 2 Edgefield County Band Students seated or named alternates in SCBDA All State Honor Band. 11 Edgefield County Band Students Recieve All-State Callbacks
Congratulations to everyone that auditioned for the SCBDA Region 2 Honor Band on Saturday. A special congratulations to Jordan Pixley (STHS), Braeden Sides (STHS), Anna Caddell (JET), Baylee Redman (JET), Noah Kowalewski (JET), Luke Dampier (JET), Allison Carter (JET), Lacy Latham (JET), Brantson Kulp (MMS), Savannah Godwin (MMS) and Aren Brenes (MMS) who received All State callbacks. Final Region Band results will be announced after All State auditions on Saturday.

Rebel Regiment Finishes 4th in State
The Strom Thurmond Rebel Regiment finished their 2016 competitive season on Saturday, October 29 at Spring Valley High School. The Rebel Regiment placed fourth out of 14 ensembles at 2016 SCBDA 2A State Championships with an overall score of 89.7. This is fourth place finish was the ensembles highest state finals finish since 2012 and concluded a very successful 2016 competitive season for the Rebel Regiment. Thank you to all the parents, donors, and community members who continue to support the Rebel Regiment and the Bands of Strom Thurmond High School.
